Meet Jahkil

Jahkil Jackson Author, Philanthropist, Superhero, and Founder of Project I AM. Empathy and generosity run deep in the heart of Jahkil Jackson. From the age of 5, Jahkil has been working to make an impact on a significant and global problem; homelessness. Out of this enormous heart, an idea was sprouted to create his own organization that builds awareness and takes action to help the homeless population in his hometown of Chicago and beyond. "The first time I can remember feeling empathy was when I was out with my aunt and cousins feeding people who were outside in the cold,” he recalls. “I was 5 years old, and this was the 1st time I had been exposed to homelessness. On this cold Chicago winter night, I felt confused and sad. I did not understand why people were sleeping outside. I saw dirt, rats, and trash all around. This is what motivated me to try to find a way to help. My family eventually helped me start an organization when I was eight called Project I Am to build awareness of this tragedy in the world."

A young man on a critical mission, Jahkil has impacted over 80,000 men, women, and children globally through his work and his "Blessing Bags," a package of necessities that he and members of his team hand deliver to the less fortunate. Because of such compassion and dedication, Jahkil is now a best-selling author and motivational speaker. He aims to encourage young people around the country to positively impact their communities. To name just a handful of his accomplishments, Jahkil has been recognized as a Youth Ambassador for Heartland Alliance, one of the world's largest anti-poverty organizations, he is a member of the WE International Youth Council, and most incredibly, was named one of the three most influential people of 2017 by Barack Obama and the Obama Foundation. Jahkil even has his own Marvel comic dedicated to him and his outstanding "superhero" work.

Q&A

What do you enjoy the most about having your organization?

“What I enjoy most is being able to see the smiles on homeless people’s faces when they receive the bags. That really gives me the motivation to keep helping the community. It makes me want to do even more!”

What does your ideal weekend involve?

My ideal weekend is hanging out with my friends, watching movies, or catching something on Netflix. I also love to eat lots of food, play 2k, make TikToks and on Sundays, take naps!

We all want to change and improve our world. What is the most important thing that you would change or fix today with the snap of your fingers?

This is a great question because if we don’t sit down and have conversations and acknowledge how the world really is, then it will continue to carry on as is, going downhill! The most important thing that I would change is the inequality in our society. I feel that if we all had equal access to resources such as health care, education, employment, training, etc., then the world would be more balanced. With this access and equality, it would clearly have to be no racism, sexism, ageism, or any other ISM that you can think of!

What is your favorite MPOWERD product, and how do you use it?

The Luci Pro Series is my favorite product because of the charging feature, but the light that I have engaged with the most for my Project I Am initiative is the Luci Original light which offers light options for those sleeping on the streets.
